Summary
Neuronal cultures are excellent systems to study the interplay between the dynamics and the connectivity of neuronal networks, and to uncover the principles governing the emergence and maintenance of spontaneous activity. A particularly attractive system is the one formed by clustered neuronal cultures, obtained as a set of densely packed interconnected neuronal ensembles. The size and interconnectivity of the clusters can be dictated by constraining the growth of the clusters to predefined molds.
In this talk I will present the different strategies to prepare and study clustered networks. I will show that information on the actual connectivity between clusters can be obtained using diverse labeling techniques. This information can be combined with measurements of spontaneous neuronal activity to analyze the dependence of network dynamics on connectivity. Finally I will show that perturbations on the network by either chemical or physical means provide an interesting approach to study the resilience and robustness of network dynamics.
