Blockchain technology and its synergies with p2p storage systems

Blockchain technology enables the creation of a decentralized and distributed environment in which transactions and data are stored in a publicly available ledger not controlled by a central authority. Transactions are secure, ubiquitous, and trustworthy as they employ cryptographic principles. The talk will be focused on storage aspects and the limitations of blockchain technology, considering the limited amount of data that can be saved into a chain during the execution of each transaction. We will discuss the alternative storage options as well as synergies of blockchain technology and p2p storage systems, such as IPFS, Swarm, etc. Additionally, a system for managing digital micro-credentials named EduCTX will be presented. It is a global distributed and decentralized platform based on Blockchain 2.0, designed on top of a consortium P2P network and implemented on the Ethereum platform. The platform offers a comprehensive and unified digital environment for managing micro-credentials for individuals by educational institutions as well as other potential stakeholders such as companies, institutions, and organizations. Furthermore, by enabling public access to the ledger, the platform provides organizations the possibility to develop their digital services Ph.D. automate the evaluation of individuals skills and knowledge. EduCTX solution received the award eNagrada 2019 from the Slovenian Society Informatika as the best software solution. Short bio: Aida Kamialić Latifić is an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the Blockchain Lab:UM group. She received the Ph.D. degree in computer science and informatics from the University of Maribor in 2014. Her research interests include advanced database technologies, blockchain technology, medical procedures modeling and time knowledge acquisition for medical procedures. During her Ph.D. studies she was a visiting researcher at the University Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain.
