Summary
Resum:
Current healthcare system is transitioning worldwide from the traditional medicine using drug-based one-size fits all therapies, to a more individualized therapeutic approach that is patient-based and is designated as Precision Medicine. However, Precision Medicine is not just treating cancers with targeted therapies. It refers to any personalized diagnostic and therapeutic action that is based on the genomic and molecular information obtained from the patient, regardless of their disease. While it is rapidly growing through expansion in molecular biomarkers and big data-analytics, its clinical deployment has limitations and challenges that need attention for its most effective delivery. These include stronger physician's education and evidentiary support; new artificial intelligence-driven algorithms for optimizing healthcare analytics that support complementary and companion diagnostic tests; better regulation of Laboratory Developed Tests and targeted therapies; and new operational and financial models that bring Precision Medicine to doctor's office.
In this seminar, an overview is offered on the contemporary development of principles and practices of Precision Medicine, its laboratory and clinical methods, its current clinical applications, business landscape and its main challenges for operationalizing its clinical deployment.
